Animals on the Galapagos Islands are very diverse. If you are unsure about visiting the Islands, this article will provide you with an argument to not hesitate and book a tour to this lovely destination. There are numerous exotic, wild creatures that you can spot on the Ecuadorian islands. However, this post focuses on presenting just 6 of them which are the icons of Galápagos.
If you like bird-watching, then necessarily you must visit Galápagos to spot how clumsy are blue-footed boobies while walking on the land. This species of a marine bird eat mainly fish, so sometimes the tourists can notice when blue-footed boobies swim or dive. Regarding basic information about those birds, they live on average 17 years and weight approximately 1.5 kg (source: National Geographic). What is interesting, the word “booby” comes from the Spanish word which means “stupid”. When looking “face to face”, they indeed have a funny beak expression. 🙂
This species can be met on the Galápagos Islands only. Their breeding population is tiny as there are less than 1000 breeding pairs (source: penguins.cl). Galápagos Penguin is the second smallest penguin in the world – it weighs about 2.5 kg. This species is endangered.
Galápagos Fur Seal
If you want to visit Galápagos, then be prepared that sometimes, when you would like to rest after the long walk, the nearest bench may be already taken… by a Galápagos Fur Seal. Yes, this animal is likely to relax whenever it wants – on the bench, in the park or on the beach. 🙂 Please, remember not to disturb these majestic creatures.
Galápagos Marine Iguana
Little Godzilla? A small dragon? No, this is just Galápagos Marine Iguana. You can find this species on the Galápagos Islands only. Many sub-species can be encountered on different islands. Their diet is algal, and their weight varies from 1-13 kg depending on the subspecies.
Beautiful flamingos are the next reason why the Galápagos Islands are worth visiting. Again, if you like bird-watching, we recommend spotting flamingos in their wild natural environment. As flamingos are social birds, you are likely to notice them in groups.
Galápagos Giant Tortoise
Among animals on the Galápagos Islands, giant tortoises are the most iconic species – after all the Spanish word “Galápagos” means “tortoise”. They can weigh up to 417 kg, and they live over 100 years. On Isabela Island, you can observe the process of feeding turtles in the Turtle Breeding Centre.
