If you are in Quito, you cannot miss visiting the middle of the world (Mitad del Mundo in Spanish). Although some people may think that walking on the equatorial line is quite boring, I can ensure you that this place has much more to offer. Follow this guide to find out why visiting Mitad del Mundo is a good trip idea.
Mitad del Mundo – what it is?
Located around 15 mi / 25 km from the Quito city centre, the middle of the world is a land where you can walk on the equatorial line. In other words, tourists can enjoy being on Southern and Northern hemispheres at the same time. Of course, besides the equator itself, there are a few other attractions designated for tourists.
How to get to Mitad del Mundo?
The attraction is located within the borders of Quito, the capital of Ecuador. There are many ways to get to this place. Firstly, you can simply take a public bus in Quito. According to our best knowledge, public buses to MdM goes from Terminal La Ofelia which is in the north part of the city. However, we recommend ensuring about this, e.g. at your local hostel.
Alternatively, you may decide to rent a car and go on your own although we don’t recommend it. Besides the fact that it is a less ecological option, you are also likely to get stuck in traffic jams. Also, there are many traffic lanes just for buses so it may help saving you time. The only disadvantage is that buses are often full of passengers.
Mitad del Mundo – what to do?
The biggest attraction in Mital del Mundo is, of course, a yellow equatorial line and a famous monument called “The Monument to the Equator”. What is interesting, both, the line and monument are in a wrong location. 🙂 As you can read on Wikipedia, the real equatorial line “lies about 240 meters north of the marked line”.
The next attraction is Museo Etnográfico Mitad del Mundo. You can learn there about the culture of indigenous Ecuadorians. If you have a lot of time for this trip, then necessarily visit private Intiñan Solar Museum. In this place, guides will present you many tricks that happen, e.g. due to the Coriolis effect.
In Mital del Mundo there are also restaurants, shops with hand-made souvenirs. 🙂
If you visit Mitad del Mundo, we encourage you to support the local community. There are many ways to do it. For instance, if you want to buy a souvenir, choose handicrafts from locals – we can ensure you that their works are beautiful and not expensive for the Europeans. You can also visit mentioned Museo Etnográfico to enlarge your knowledge about indigenous Ecuadorians. Finally, take a bus instead of driving a car. There is more than enough smog in Quito!
